BY PUBLISHING THIS NEW AND REGULAR FEATURE, WE HOPE TO FOCUS ON THE BUSINESS
LIVES OF UK CABARET SUBSCRIBERS WHO OPERATE IN THE AGENCY SECTOR. BARRIE LUCAS
HAS BEEN A COUNCILLOR OF THE AGENTS ASSOCIATION FOR MANY YEARS AND TALKS TO
MARK RITCHIE ABOUT HIS CAREER JOURNEY.
MR: How long have you actually operated as an agent?
BL: I started as a singer in South Wales in the 1960’s and worked all
over the world. But in 1986 I was working in Tenerife and saw the need
for an International agent who knew both sides of the entertainment
scene.
MR: You are known for managing American-type soul and Motown
acts. How did that develop?
BL; I like smart and slick groups and I began with an American Drifters
style group. I have represented many other similar acts for years now
and I just enjoy this area of show business.
MR: How did your wife and business partner Vicci become involved?
BL: I met Vicci in Tenerife and she possesses great accountancy and secretarial skills. We become a couple
and Vicci took to the agency business with ease.
MR: Many people also know you as a producer of trade showcases. Why did you get into all that?
BL: I thought there was a need to make showcases more upmarket. An act can come onto one of my
showcases for one price, for which they appear in a prestigious venue and also receive a complimentary
showreel and a complimentary publicity photo-shoot. I make sure the standard of the acts accepted to
appear suit the needs of the clients who attend and it has all taken off over the last few years.
The next Showcase Productions Showcase is in Blackpool in
November.
